The remodeled Trumbull facility and the new Danbury site join Chelsea Piers in Stamford and the Sono Fieldhouse in Norwalk as centers where families and individuals can have fun and stay fit.
"There's no question there is a spinoff impact for restaurants, " said Edward Lavernoich, Trumbull's economic and community development director, referring to the Insports Centers. "Certainly, it's an asset."

Having Insports in the office park is an attraction for potential tenants, according to Steve Hodson, president of Hodson Realty in Trumbull, and is a good fit for businesses already in the complex.
"That area has over 1 million square feet of Class A space. Having recreation there gives professionals there more opportunity for fitness year-round, " he said. "It will benefit the restaurants around the corner."
Insports Centers Trumbull closed the 108, 000-square-foot facility at the end of May and reconstructed it, installing a 100-yard artificial turf field for football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, field hockey and rugby.

It also installed three regulation-size basketball courts that double as surfaces for other games and a 60-yard glass-enclosed playing area for box lacrosse, field hockey and boarded soccer. Plans call for a full-service restaurant/pub to open in several weeks.
The company also installed a new heating, LED lighting, ventilating and air conditioning system, and a 250-kilowatt solar roof system provides 60 percent of the facility's power needs.
"We gutted the building and started from scratch, " said Peter Corbett, principal in Insports Centers Trumbull LLC, which acquired the Sports Zone from McCoy Ventures. "I believe there's a trend toward building these public facilities. I think there's a big demand for it."

That is particularly true in the Northeast, where late fall and winter weather is cold and damp, making outdoor fields unplayable four or more months a year, he said.
Open 7 a.m. to midnight, 360 days a year, Insports has six full-time employees and expects to have 30 to 100 part-time workers, depending on the season, said Corbett. He is also the founder of the National Sports Center Consortium, a membership organization focused on best practices, marketing, financing and sponsorship of more than 30 sports facilities.
Corbett, who has spent more than two decades operating sports facilities in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, said he does not consider the other large recreation venues in the region to be competitors.

"I'm a firm believer that everybody should be successful. There's certainly enough business out there, " said Corbett, whose business, like Chelsea Piers and the Sono Fieldhouse, is a strong addition to the area business community.
That was the case in Stamford, where NBC Sports moved into a renovated former Clairol factory building next to Chelsea Piers Connecticut, a 400, 000-square-foot recreation facility.
"I believe Chelsea Piers was part of NBC Sports decision to come to Stamford, " said Laure Aubuchon, the city's director of economic development. "Stamford Hospital also located its sports medicine rehabilitation center there. That would not have happened if it were a bakery."

The Sono Fieldhouse in Norwalk has become an integral contributor to the neighborhood and city, according to Tad Diesel, Norwalk's director of marketing and business development.
"It's quietly becoming a vibrant section of town, " he said. "It's been the site of significant community events. It's a gorgeous facility."
Located about 20 miles to the northwest of Corbett's complex is the Sports Dome, a 120, 000-square-foot facility in on Shelter Rock Lane in Danbury.

Opened in August, the structure looks like a cross-hatched silver egg emerging from the ground on 16 acres. The dome, 90 feet high at its tallest point, is inflated by forced air, and houses an artificial turf field measuring 125 by 68 yards.
Unlike a brick-and-mortar structure, the dome can be deflated and taken away for easier re-use of the parcel, but Ray Franklin, a director of the Sports Dome, doesn't think that will occur.
"The project took almost a year to get off the ground, " said Franklin, who originated the idea many years ago with Kirk Bamford, a director who is also the New Canaan High School girls' soccer coach. They teamed with Frank Mariano, the project's owner and developer, to create the facility.

The location is ideally situated, Franklin said, noting Danbury's proximity to Interstates 84 and 684 and the area population and its love of field sports like soccer and lacrosse, which are ideal for the Sports Dome.
"You have to look at the demographics and ethnic cultures, " Franklin said, commenting that the complex hosted Ecuadorian Day on Sept. 14. "We just had Fuel Cell Energy here -- 150 people playing volleyball, kickball and soccer, " he said, adding that the field, surrounded by a quarter-mile running track, can be divided to play multiple games simultaneously.
"The winter was really bad, but we held up, " Franklin said. "I increased the pressure and the temperature, and the snow melted. It can withstand a 150-mile-an-hour wind."

Jeff Ryer, principal in Ryer Associates, a Danbury-based commercial real estate firm, said he was heartened to see a unique commercial project in the city.
Mick Consalvo, vice president of Tower Realty, another Danbury commercial real estate firm, is hoping that a user of the Sports Dome will notice the for-sale sign in front of a vacant wooded commercial parcel across the road from the facility.
"Without the sign there, we'll miss those opportunities. The lot has been approved for a 24, 000-square-foot industrial building, " Consalvo said, noting the proximity of nearby Shelter Rock Business Center.
